3/13: Serving at Marshall High School

Come join us for a local serving project at Marshall High School on Saturday, March 13, at 9:00 a.m. Members of Willamette Christian Church and our friends and neighbors who care about serving the inner city will be meeting at the school and helping pick up the grounds, pray for the students and community, and just show love and support to the Lents community. People of all ages - young and old - can join — it’s a really easy and fun way to spend an hour or two on Saturday morning as a family.

Why Marshall High School?
Marshall High struggles with a high drop out rate (43% per year), with kids that are below national averages for reading (43%) and math (32%). We want to be a blessing to these at-risk youth in Portland, and to communities in need, by doing self-less acts of charity on their behalf.

Who will be there?
Families with young children, our High Schoolers, the men’s group, members of serving teams, our friends at Portland Leadership — anyone who wants to join in a fun and easy morning and be a blessing in unexpected ways. The more people, the more fun and lighter workload we’ll have.

Where is it? 3905 SE 91st, Portland, OR (click here for map and directions). Park in the main parking lot and meet at the entrance to the school. We’ll have refreshments for you.

Is it safe?
This will be a very safe activity, on the grounds of Marshall High School. They are thrilled to have us as they are all trying to rebuild their under-served community. We’ll work together as a team, and we recommend that you bring light work gloves for sanitary purposes.

What will happen when I get there?
Bring your light work gloves, and we’ll have trash bags for you to pick up trash and weeds on the property. We’ll have a time of prayer for this community and for the students and families of this school. When we’re done andif you’d like to participate, we will journey to the Young Family Hope House (less than a mile away) and pray for the work that will happen there.

What is the Hope House?
This is a home purchased and sponsored by Paul and Kim Young (author of the bestselling novel, The Shack) for at-risk and homeless teens in the Portland area. We are helping to fix up this home and ready it for homeless youth to move in starting July 1, 2010.

Parents Night 2/24: for parents of middle & high school students

Join other parents for open discussion on the current emphases, happenings and opportunities for partnering with the Student Ministries at WCC. This 90 minute interface is intended for parents of both middle school and high school students.

Date: Wednesday, February 24th
Time: 7:00-8:30pm
Location: Willamette Christian Church Lobby (front entry)

The High School group will meet from 7:00-9:00pm in Phase II, as we do weekly.

No need to RSVP (unless you want to) — just come and bring other parents too.

Open Gym closed for holidays

The gym will be closed this holiday season through January 3 to allow our after-hours facilities coordinators and set-up and teardown teams to spend time with their families. See you again starting on January 4!

Jesus changed the course of history in a way no other person has. Hospitals and universities were created in His name, and even our modern calendar exists because of Him.

On December 24, Willamette Christian Church will host an intimate, hour-long special Christmas Eve service at 3, 5 and 7pm. This service will be a beautiful, music-filled evening dedicated to remembering the amazing reality of Jesus’ birth. Children are welcome in the main service, or childcare will be available for birth through 1st grade at the 3 & 5pm services.

Women’s Christmas Dessert: The Generous Woman

On Sunday night, December 13th from 7-9 pm, women from all over our community will be gathering here together to celebrate the Christmas season. Entitled, “A Generous Woman”, it will be an evening composed of beautiful music, a faith-story shared by noted speaker, Kaytie Fieldler, decadent desserts, lively conversation, and elegant ambiance right here in our new church home.

We invite you to join us and to bring family and friends along as well. The cost is $10 and, if needed, we would be happy to assist with the cost for those you may invite. It is our hope that everyone be able to attend. Simply make an indication when you go to register. Sign ups can be found here. We look forward to spending the evening with you. Merry Christmas!

789 JAM This Friday, Nov 20!

Don’t miss the next 789 JAM, scheduled for Friday, November 20 from 7:30 – 10:00. Tell all your friends! ALL 6th – 9th grade students are welcome – not just those who attend West Linn or Wilsonville schools. DON’T FORGET YOUR SCHOOL ID – IT’S REQUIRED FOR ADMISSION! You’ll also need to show it to get the new 789 JAM photo ID, which will give you a $2 discount off the $10 admission at all future dances. Fill out the ID card application and have your photo taken at the event, and you’ll get your card at the end of the evening.

Now that it’s getting dark so early, please stay safe! When you’re being dropped off, stay in the car until you reach the front of the line at the building entrance, and remind your chauffeur that they’re required to come inside at the end of the dance to pick you up. See you on the 20th!

Thursday, November 5th: 7-9pm Phase II Lounge

Finding joy and peace in our lives is something that we as women desire. Join us for our first ever Adorn night, as we consider the secret of contentment, just in time for the holiday season.

Adorn is a special night once a month where you can enjoy a restful evening with the ladies of Willamette. Casual and comfortable, with special treats and plenty of coffee, join us as we savor an evening of fellowship and practical wisdom from women right here in our church. No sign-ups required (and no homework assigned!). Childcare available for $5 donation. We look forward to seeing you there.

Jesus Weekend! (WCC High School Fall Retreat)

We are super stoked about our upcoming JESUS WEEKEND for our high school group at WCC. It is a weekend we will spend totally devoted to getting to know Jesus more. The students will read entirely through the gospel of Mark, be given relevant teaching, have tons of fun on the beach, and much, much more. We think this will be a weekend the students will remember for years to come.

The weekend will be November 6-8, 2009 in Waldport, OR. Go to the WCC student site for more information, and to sign up today!

We’re so excited to host 789 Jam, a new community program for 7th, 8th and 9th graders that we’re co-sponsoring with West Linn Police and Parks & Rec, along with former Trail Blazer Brian Grant. The program kicks off with a dance party this Friday from 7:30 - 10:30pm. Read today’s article in The Oregonian. to learn more about how 789 Jam got started.
